1) Why is Cleaning MX Goggles Necessary?
Every time you go on a track, a massive amount of mud falls off from the track from your wheels or others and dirty all the gear, clothes, & MX Bike.
And problems that happen when you try to wipe dirt off this with sleeves or a jacket, this will scratch the lenses, making them blind & more vulnerable to fog.
That’s not all;
- The mud also changes the shiny plastic frame color into a muddy one over an extended period of time if you don’t clean them regularly.
- Plus, the foam padding will become brittle & smelly with your sweat will start to fall off.
- The excessive mud in the vents blocks off the fresh air flow, which causes sweat & fog builds up inside the goggle lens, blocking your view.
So, if you don’t clean your Motocross Goggles, you will lose them in days or months instead of years.
2) Clean Dirt Bike Goggles in 3 Easy Steps
You can clean any Dirt Bike Goggles, no matter how dirty they are, in 3 easy steps;
- Step no 1: Unassembly
- Step no 2: Rinsing & Soaking
- Step no 3: Drying & Assembly
Step no 1: Unassembly
First, if you want to clean every corner of the Goggles, take them apart ( if possible ).
First, start with the Lens; if it’s detachable, separate it, then move toward the strap and unassemble it from the frame. After this process, you will end up with 3-components;
- i) Lens
- ii) Strap
iii) Frame
Step no 2: Rinsing & Soaking
In this process, we will clean the goggles in 2-steps;
- a) Rinsing
- b) Soaking
If your goggles are lightly dirty, then you can just rinse them, and there is no need for soaking ( step b ). But, if they are too dirty, then first soak them, then rinse them.
a) Rinsing
The first stage of cleaning the Goggles is to get them under running warm water and follow the below steps;
- Get the Lens under the tap, and let the water take all the mud off. Do not try to rub the lens, or scratches will happen. After it’s clean, simply wipe it with a clean microfiber cloth.
- Rinsing the Frame is a bit more tricky than lenses because the frame has a lot more small corners & vents where mud can get stuck. For cleaning the frame, take a small toothbrush and rub it off in the vents & other small areas when it’s under running water.
- The strap can also be cleaned with this process if it’s not too dirty. Just get it under water, rub it off on itself, and use some soap if necessary. Then let it dry in the open air.
b) Soaking
Now, if there is too much mud, it’s suggested to soak the Goggle parts in warm water & soap solution.
Soaking helps the dry mud gets wet and lays off itself, or when you rinse it afterward, hardened mud comes off easily without scratching the surface. Plus, soaking in a soap solution also removes the sweat from foam padding and saves it from getting brittle.
To clean the goggles by soaking process, follow the below procedure;
- Get warm water in a clean bucket.
- Add some hand soap and mix it well.
- Put the Lenses, Frame, and strap in it separately and leave it for 10 ~ 30 minutes.
- When almost all the mud is dissolved in the soapy water, get the lens & frame out. While Rub the strap in itself, and then pull it out.
- Afterward, rinse the parts under running water.
- If the mud is still there, use a soft microfibre cloth on the sensitive lens and a toothbrush on the hard plastic frame to clean the goggles crystal clear. Always make sure the goggles parts are still under running water when you use cleaning tools.
Step no 3: Drying & Assembly
For proper drying without damaging anything, follow the below guidelines;
- Use a Microfiber towel to dry off the lens & frame.
- Press the goggle foam padding with your fingers to get the excess water out.
- Then hand the frame & strap in an area where the air is flowing. Preferably a shadowy place because the sun can brittle & discolor the parts.
That’s it; after everything is dry, put them all together in the same way you separated them in the first step.
★ Pro Tips
- Do not use chemicals, detergents, or dish soap during soaking because they can damage the coatings, crack the lens, and brittle the foam.
- Ensure the microfiber cloth is 100% clean and there is nothing on the lens surface. Otherwise, even after rinsing and soaking, when you wipe, you will unconsciously grind dirt particles and scratch the surface of the lens.
- Don’t use Windex glass cleaner spray or liquid to clean the lens surface because it contains ammonia which basically scratches off anti-fog & UV coatings. And overextended use of these chemicals will make spider-like cracks in the lens.
- If your Goggles are too old and the color of your frame has become mud-like, and you want to restore it, then it can easily be done with a plastic cleaner. Simply disassemble the goggles, apply the plastic cleaner to it, and voila, you will get the frame color just as new.
- You can clean the goggles completely with the microfiber bag that comes with them. But also clean the Goggle Bag Regularly because it is always exposed to a muddy environment and gets dirty easily.
The inner layer of lens coatings is very sensitive than the outside ones. Never ever try to rub off the inside of the lens with your hand, motocross gloves, or anything else. Only clean the inner and outer sides of the Lens with a specified soft microfiber cloth.
